When going through a collection of soul 45’s or thinking back on some of the records we used to own, it could be easy to remember certain records by the large labels at the top. Prepare for some nostalgia as we go through a few prominent Soul/R&B labels from the 1960’s.
Gordy
Owner Berry Gordy Jr. held Gordy from 1962 to 1981 in Detroit, Michigan. You may think of Gordy and remember the Motown Record label as well, because Gordy Records was a product or division of this label. In the 60’s Gordy was primarily focused on soul and had several successful artists including:
· The Temptations
· Marv Johnson
· Edwin Star
· Bobby Taylor
· The Contours
· And many more…

The Gordy division of Motown had a slogan, “If It’s a Hit, It’s a Miracle” that was later changed to avoid confusion with “The Miracles.)
Okeh
Founded by Otto Heinman in New York, NY, Okeh was primarily in business from 1951 to 1968 where they were known for soul. Some of the artists on Okeh in the 60’s included:
· Vibrations
· Billy Butler & The Chanters
· Ted Taylor
· Otis Williams
· And many more…

Fun fact-you may have seen the Okeh logo taking your kids shopping at Forever 21, because their logo has been used on clothing there!
One-Derful
Ernie and George Leaner started One-Derful in Chicago, IL, and worked from 1962-1968 with an emphasis on soul. The label featured artists like:
· Bobby Starr
· The Five Du-Tones
· Otis Clay
· Sharpees
· And many more…

If you’re looking for a one-derful record on Google, you may have found “Secret Stash,” who purchased a large portion of the collection. At Parker’s, we still have some in stock!
